This site is a personal blog written by Scott Rennie, D.O. It exists to publish medical education. It is not a patient portal, it is not connected to any electronic health record, and nothing sent through it becomes part of a medical record.

Do not send health information through this site

This is the most important thing on the page.

Do not put personal health information in the contact form or in a comment. Do not describe your symptoms, your medications, your test results, or anything else you would expect a physician to keep confidential.

Messages sent through this site are not protected by HIPAA, they are not a confidential medical communication, and I will not answer clinical questions through them. If you need medical care, contact your own physician. If this is an emergency, call 911 or go to an emergency department.

What this site collects

Comments. If you leave a comment, the form collects the name and email address you enter, your comment text, and your IP address. Your email address is not published. Comments are held for approval before they appear. An anonymized version of your email address may be sent to Gravatar so an avatar can be displayed.

Contact form. If you use the contact form, it collects the name, email address and message you provide, so that I can reply to you.

Email subscription. If you subscribe, your email address is stored so new articles can be sent to you. Every email includes an unsubscribe link, and unsubscribing removes you.

Site statistics. This site uses Jetpack Stats, which records aggregate information such as page views, referring sites, approximate location by country or region, and device type. I use it to understand which articles people actually read. It does not identify you to me personally.

Cookies. Cookies are used to remember your details if you leave a comment, and to keep you signed in if you have a WordPress.com account. No advertising or cross site tracking cookies are used, and there is no advertising on this site.

Who else is involved

This site is hosted on WordPress.com, operated by Automattic Inc. Automattic processes the information above as part of hosting, statistics, subscriptions and comment handling, and its own privacy policy applies to that processing.

I do not sell, rent or trade anything collected here. I do not share it with advertisers. I do not use it for marketing beyond sending new articles to people who asked to receive them.

How long things are kept

Comments and their metadata are kept indefinitely, so that follow up replies still make sense. Contact form messages are kept as long as needed to respond. Subscription records are kept until you unsubscribe.

Your choices

You can unsubscribe from emails at any time using the link at the bottom of any email. You can ask me to delete a comment you left or a message you sent, and I will. If you want to know what information about you is held here, ask and I will tell you.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes, the date at the top changes with it.
